The federal Liberal government is looking to keep their election campaign promise that 2015 would be the last election using first past the post.
Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas-Taylor is hosting a Town Hall tonight for anyone who wishes to contribute to the national discussion.
She says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stressed the importance of consulting with the people.
“We want to hear what they think about the current system that we do have,” says Petitpas-Taylor. “And what is their preferred alternative, what do they see as an alternative type of system, and we want to really make sure we have that conversation with them.”
Petitpas-Taylor says all MPs will be reporting back to Minister of Democratic Institutions Maryam Monsef, but adds they want to engage as many Canadians as possible in this electoral reform discussion.
Petitpas-Taylor says while they recognize more Canadians turned out to vote last year than had bothered in years, they really want to encourage all Canadians to get involved in this discussion that will have repercussions on how they will cast their ballot.
The Electoral Reform Town Hall is taking place tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Moncton Lions Community Centre.
If you are planning to attend, she requests you call her office at 506.851.3310 in advance so they know how many to expect.
However, everyone is welcome, even if they don’t call ahead.
