A number of snags have forced Moncton city council to push back phase one construction of theĀ Downing Street Legacy Project.
The project’s eventual goal is to connect city hall to the Petitcodiac River with a vehicle-pedestrian thoroughfare including small shops, public art and a giant plaza.
One of the main holdups is an engineering report that suggested phase one work needs to take place over two seasons to protect the infrastructure long-term.
Senior engineer Alcide Richard understands the public might be disappointed, but he’s asking for patience.
“We are embracing the concept and the vision and we feel that we should take the time to do it right and it will all be worthwhile in the long term.”
Phase one construction was already supposed to have begun, but now won’t start until next fall with a scheduled completion date sometime in early-to-mid 2016.
