It’s a helplessness most of us can’t imagine, trying to stop a massive wildfire destroying your community and being forced to watch as it burns people’s homes and businesses and maybe even your own home.
Peter Alexander of Local 771-the Saint John Firefighters tells us it goes against the DNA of a firefighter to watch a building burn.
He says these normally they follow the rule of “risk a lot to save a lot” but out there they are risking everything to save everything adding these people will go to the brink of making the ultimate sacrifice to save whatever they can.
Alexander says firefighters and other emergency workers will go above and beyond because they know when a small business is lost in a disaster like this it may not re-open and that hurts the community.
