All eyes will be on Washington today, as Donald Trump becomes the new President of the United States.
It is Inauguration day.
The official swearing in will happen at around noon today, with an inaugural address to follow at around 1pm.
Protests are threatened, and many Canadians are planning to take part.
Political Science Professor at UPEI Don Desserud says the last time we had anything close to this was the civil rights movement, with Canada feeling they had a stake in what was going on the US at this profound level.
“Clearly what happens in the United States affects us, and it always has but this idea of a visceral anger against what was going on, the Vietnam war, the Civil Rights movement in the 60’s and very early 70’s provoked a lot of reaction in Canada, and people were bussing down to join in protest,” says Desserud.
“This is something we haven’t see in many, many years though, and I think it is indicative of a broader concern that is perhaps global of the uncertainty of what is to come, and of the ability of Trump to actually govern the country.”
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to turnout for the inaugural event, with thousands of them being protesters.
Reports says there will be about 28,000 law enforcement officers protecting the inauguration festivities.
