Federal Conservative Opposition Leader Rona Ambrose says the wildfires hit close to home for her.
She is the MP for Sturgeon River-Parkland in northern Alberta.
“Obviously I’m familiar with that region. There have been many homes lost inclduign some friends of mine,” she notes.
Ambrose urges anyone looking to help to support the Canadian Red Cross.
She also says thousands of people need a place to go and it’s advised that anyone who has friends or family in Alberta to open up their homes.
Meantime, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair calls the wildfires a terrible situation.
But he says Alberta residents will come together to support each other similar to flooding in Calgary a couple of years ago.
“I was impressed by the strength and resilience of those communities and the people in Alberta. I still have my ‘Come Hell or High Water’ T-shirt when they said they were going to put on the Stampede anyway. So I guess it’s that grit and determination that will see them through this one as well,” he says.
Mulcair says the number one priority right now is to ensure that everyone is safe but the images make it very clear there is going to be a need for more help going forward.
