Jackie Vautour and his wife Yvonne will have to continue living in their run-down home in Kouchibouguac National Park now that a fundraiser to buy the couple a new mini-home has been abruptly cancelled.
Parks Canada officials recently told the family that the couple could continue living there but only “as is”.
Jackie’s daughter Simonne told a news conference in Moncton that the land her father lives on still belongs to him.
“The land was never given away, it was never bought, it is his now and it was always his.”
Parks Canada expropriated land owned by Jackie Vautour when Kouchibouguac National Park was created in the 1970’s but he and his wife, now both elderly, have refused to leave.
