Changes over access to abortion in the province are being applauded by the pro-choice group Reproductive Justice New Brunswick.
Starting in January, the Gallant government will no longer require two doctors to certify an abortion, a specialist will not have to perform the procedure and it will be covered the same as any other medical service.
Reproductive Justice New Brunswick spokesperson Jessie Taylor says the changes have been a long time coming.
“We credit this change by the countless hours and decades of activism by people across New Brunswick and even the rest of Canada.”
Taylor adds creating legislative barriers to prevent the procedure doesn’t prevent abortions from happening but it increases the number of women who die.
However, the New Brunswick Right to Life group disagrees and they believe the number of abortions in the province will double.
