With the new Moncton High School and residential growth in the Royal Oaks area, Elmwood Drive is getting much busier north of the Trans Canada Highway.
A $12.5 million cost-sharing agreement between the federal and provincial governments will widen a 2.2 kilometre section of Elmwood between Cedarwood Avenue and Longfellow Drive.
Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc says this is new funding from higher levels of government which means the city can free up matching funds for a downtown centre.
“I should note that this funding will be part of the replacement funding package that will allow us to support the downtown centre as a high priority for the City of Moncton,” adds LeBlanc.
Meantime, work will proceed on widening Elmwood Drive to four lanes with a storm sewer being installed and curbs and sidewalks being built on both sides of the street.
The project will be spread out over three construction seasons and should be finished by 2019.
