Fans of Hopewell Rocks were disappointed to hear the news that its Elephant Rock formation has crumbled.
Yesterday morning, almost half of the rock fell off and changed the appearance.
Property Manager Noel Hamann says this is to be expected, because the wind, rain, tides and varying temperatures are changing the rocks on a regular basis, “The whole phenomenon of the Hopewell rocks and the flowerpot rocks is the change caused by the tides and the formations of the rocks. A lot of the names that have been given to the rock formations are anecdotal names, E.T, and Mother-in-Law and various other names. But the rock surface is being transformed as we speak and new people visiting our site will see new shapes in the rocks.”
He says everyone has their own perception of what the rocks look like, “Some of the rock faces remind people of Brian Mulroney, or George Washington. It depends on where the people are from. We try to make it a game. We encourage everyone to explore and to look for new shapes.”
Hamann says this is Mother Nature at work.
In a post on the Hopewell Rocks Facebook page, officials suggest, who knows what might emerge from what now looks like a pile of rubble and suggests that everyone stay tuned.
