Meetings are being held in Fredericton today to prepare the new members of the Anglophone East District Education Council for the next four years.
Angela Lawson will be serving her second term on the Council after being re-elected.
“It’ll be nice to sit with new DEC members, and see where their passions lie,” says Lawson. “In my experience I’ve found that everybody kinda comes on board with different things that they want to achieve throughout the year and that helps us all be successful.”
She says one issue she expects will come up at future meetings is French Immersion because Premier Gallant made the platform promise that it would return to an earlier grade.
“For us as Councillors, that isn’t our decision, we have really no impact or insight on when that decision will be made or what that will entail,” says Lawson. “What’s most important for us is that whatever’s done is most successful for our students.”
She adds there are specific things that council doesn’t do.
“We don’t get involved in District staffing issues, and we don’t get involved in day to day operations,” says Lawson. “We don’t talk about a specific student at any time that’s not appropriate for our Council’s purposes, so we talk about students as a whole.”
At today’s meetings in Fredericton, new and returning Council members will be sworn in.
