A monster storm is churning in the Atlantic and is headed straight for the Domincan Republic.
Hurricane Irma, is a Category 5 with winds of close to 300km/h and is now the strongest Atlantic hurricane on record.
Halifax resident, Vicki Gesner and her husband are at a resort on the island and say although they are pleased to be evacuated they worry for those who have to stay behind.
Gesner says the looks on the faces of hotel staff showed they are very scared and she wonders if the island infrastructure such as cell towers etc. can withstand the winds that will hit.
Gesner says they are being bused to three hours to Puerta Plata and hope to be on a flight before the end of the day.
