Firefighters from all across the province marched in a parade yesterday in memory of those who died in the attacks on September 11th, 2001.
Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold remembered how the community provided a safe place for 12 planes full of cargo and passengers.
“More than 2,200 passengers needed help and a place to go, many Moncton households opened their homes and their hearts to stranded passengers from France, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States as well as to fellow Canadians,” says Arnold.

Arnold says the Red Cross provided 10,000 meals per day to the passengers in the Moncton Coliseum, while Codiac RCMP provided security, and many volunteers came to offer their help.
She details the variety of situations the region had to deal with including “diplomats who needed security, extradited criminals, living commercial cargo including some 500 exotic animals, organs en route for transplant, and patients en route for medical treatment.”

She adds the community quickly donated toys, food and personal items.
“One of the busiest sections of the Coliseum was the signup area for volunteers, in fact, more volunteers came forward to provide accommodations than there were stranded passengers,” says Arnold.
Arnold thanked all the first responders and citizens who offered their help in a time of crisis, fear, and uncertainty.
