Substance abuse rehabilitation centre Portage Atlantic is celebrating the official opening of the Lewis Fitness Centre.
The $2.1 million centre will help instill in youth the value of physical activity, and help them understand its positive impact on their behaviours and a healthy lifestyle.
Portage Atlantic Board Member Dr. Frank Wilson says this goes well beyond bricks and mortar, and helps young men and women take back control of their lives.
Physical activity helps youths in treatment improve their social, emotional and physical well-being, and make them more receptive to therapy, and improve their focus in the classroom.
The provincial government invested $450,000 last year towards the construction of the gym and fully equipped exercise room.
