Social media is lighting up in rainbows in support of the LGBTQ community in St. Stephen after a meeting with Town Council last night drew controversy over a proposed rainbow crosswalk.
The motion has been put forward by St. Stephen Middle School Principal Bronwyn Tanner and a group of students and teachers to have a rainbow crosswalk painted near the school to show support for inclusiveness in the community.
Mayor Allan MacEachern tells us he would like to clear up a few rumours. First, he says, that it was only a committee meeting, so there was no official vote on the matter as committee meetings are only meant to be an exchange of information and material with discussions. MacEachern says he has since been in talks with members at SSMS, and the group will be coming back next month to make another presentation on the matter.
He also wants to point out that any questions made by councillors during these meetings are also questions from residents they hear themselves, and they need to be asked. He says there were negative and positive comments from councillors on the rainbow crosswalk, but it is also their job to ask questions and represent all of their constituents.
MacEachern is welcoming the public to their next committee meeting on Wednesday, November 15th, at 5pm, where SSMS will be presenting, and anyone wanting to voice their concerns will be able to do so. The meeting will take place in St. Stephen Council Chambers on Milltown Blvd.
