The Gallant government is introducing legislation this week that lays out the rules for the use of cannabis in the province and penalties for drug-impaired driving.
Under the Cannabis Control Act adults would be able to carry up to 30 grams of cannabis on their person unsealed, though cannabis stored at home would have to be in a locked container or locked room so that it’s kept away from minors.
Consuming cannabis wouldn’t be allowed in public places and the act also has requirements to secure cannabis when it’s being grown on private property.
The proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act would see the creation of a drug-impaired driving program and proposed penalties include, among other things, immediate short-term roadside suspensions, discretionary and mandatory vehicle impoundment for short-term and administrative licence suspensions and zero tolence for novice drivers and drivers under 21.
