A political flyer titled “Liberal Party feminism” distributed in Moncton has been denounced by the New Brunswick Women’s Council as misogynist and the organization is urging other political parties to do the same.
The flyer depicts a cartoon of Finance Minister Cathy Rogers as a puppet controlled by Treasury Board President Roger Melanson and newly nominated Liberal candidate Courtney Pringle Carver as a robot controlled by Premier Brian Gallant.
Women’s Council executive director Beth Lyons says this incident is about all women and frightening women away from running in politics.
“Is this perhaps a backlash around some of the progress that we’ve seen around women and politics. Particularly thinking about the fact that we have the Grassroots Women for 50 Percent initiative that’s trying to boost the number of women that we see running in the next provincial election?” she questions.
On social media, both Cathy Rogers and Courtney Pringle Carver have called the flyers archaic and insulting.
Several Progressive Conservatives have also condemned the flyers.
