Hillcrest School will now be incorporated into plans for a new West end school, and will close once the new facility opens.
That was a decision made by the Anglophone East District Education Council last night.
Area resident and former student, Steve Woodworth thinks this was not the right choice, “The smaller schools and the environment in which the teachers are able to offer things there. People have always been able to make things happen at Hillcrest and they always will. I believe that this decision is going to rob our future leaders because when you are a big fish in a small pond, when they get to high school, that product from the little school shines above everybody. I believe that in this circumstance, we are rushing into a decision that we don’t have to.”
A request has already been made to the province for a new school to replace Bessborough..That will be amended to include Hillcrest..
A decision is expected to be made within the next couple of months.
The DEC Expects it will be several years before the new school is built, and in the meantime, Hillcrest is expected to continue operating as it is.
