This year’s Pollett River Run is planned for April 28th.
The annual event, held in Petitcodiac, sees hundreds of participants, bring their homemade watercrafts, so they can take a trip down the river.
But photos of trenches dug along an area where participants get access to the site where they go into the water, began appearing on social media this week.
In a statement from Communication Officer for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Jeremy Trevors said, “Following concerns raised by various community and environmental stakeholders about property and environmental damage left by mud bog participants each year, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure removed access to the property being used for the mud bog.”
Those trenches have since been filled in, but there’s no word on who is responsible for that.
RCMP are expected to keep a close watch on the day of the event, to ensure everyone is abiding by laws when it comes to the consumption of alcohol. Corporal Jullie Rogers-Marsh said they are expected to issue a news release, as they do each year, with a reminder about safety first for those participating in the event.
Concerns have been raised about the event in the past, by groups including the Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance, because of the garbage left behind and also because of mud that ends up in the river.
