Premier Brian Gallant says the current flooding along the St. John River is unprecedented with water levels in some areas of the watershed expected to exceed records set in 1973.
Gallant is urging residents to be prepared to evacuate their homes before they become isolated by floodwaters.
“If you have not done so already, please make sure to protect your home and belongings and make arrangements to leave impacted areas should conditions worsen.
Gallant says the province is receiving help from the Coast Guard although it’s unclear yet how many boats may be needed or where they may be deployed.
He adds disaster financial assistance will be available to help ease the burden for those impacted by flooding.
Homeowners are being told to document as much of the damage as possible around their properties.
