Aboiteau Beach in Cap-Pele has earned the coveted international Blue Flag designation.
It is the first coastal beach in Canada to achieve that status.
Cap-Pele mayor Serge Leger says it took three years of hard work to achieve the Blue Flag.
“They have four major criteria – water quality, environmental management, information and education and health and safety,” he notes.
Unlike some other beaches along the Northumberland shoreline, Leger says Aboiteau Beach has clean water which is tested twice weekly during the summer.
He believes the designation will help bring even more visitors to the beach this year.
The accomplishment will be celebrated with a flag raising ceremony on June 17th at Aboiteau Beach.
