The New Brunswick Flood Appeal by the Canadian Red Cross has reached about $650,000 and the organization has no intention of closing it anytime soon.
Provincial director Bill Lawlor says each eligible household will receive $300 and that money isn’t to replace losses but instead to help meet basic needs.
The criteria include being evacuated from their primary home for more than two days or being without power for more than three days or had water and/or sewer back-up.
“We are asking them the question so they can help self-identify to us as the Red Cross, are they facing financial hardship and difficulty to replace some of the immediate urgent items right now?” says Lawlor.
“If they are, those are the folks that we want to try to help the quickest.”
The Red Cross says depending on the final amount of donations to the Red Cross and the number of households that register for help, more support could be provided at a later date.
The fundraising effort began on May 3.
