A university student has launched a petition in the hopes of seeing plastic bags banned in the province.
Lavallee Forbes spent some three months on an international exchange in Morocco, where they are not allowed to use the bags,” So I got used to living in a country that did not have plastic bags, and I figured out that it didn’t make a big difference to my everyday life. It was just as convenient and it was just as easy. It really made a huge impact on the environment in Morocco and it really cleaned things up a lot.”
Morocco banned plastic bags in 2016, and several other countries have done the same.
So far, Lavallee has 300 signatures, and she has had support from various groups including businesses and other students.
Her hope is to present the petition to the provincial government, once she has enough signatures, and has raised enough awareness on the issue.
Just this January, Montreal became the first Canadian city to implement a city-wide ban on plastic bags; thereby becoming a leader in sustainability. Victoria, BC followed suite on July 1st, 2018 and Vancouver has recently voted to ban plastic straws and foam cups.
