Brian Gallant will step down as leader of the provincial Liberal party once a new leader is chosen.
Gallant making the announcement in Fredericton this morning.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I will be resigning as leader of the Liberal party of New Brunswick effective when a new leader is chosen by the Liberal party membership.” Gallant said.

He says three things must happen in order for the province to grow.
“We need to keep people here, bring people back here and welcome new Canadians to our province as well. By doing these three things simultaneously we will be able to continue to grow our population.” Gallant said.
The former premier says going forward he believes the Liberal party is the best party to grow the economy, advance women’s equality and to protect and enhance people’s rights and to protect the environment.

The Liberal party of New Brunswick responding to news that Brian Gallant will be stepping down as leader.
Executive Director Keiller Zed says while they will be sad to see Brian go, there are eternally grateful for his strong leadership moving the party and the province forward over the past six years.
The party’s board of directors will meet in Fredericton on December 1st to discuss the next steps in terms of organizing a leadership convention.
