Over the last week the classic Holiday favorite ” Baby It’s Cold Outside” has received more than it’s fair share of News Coverage. It all started with one radio station in Ohio banning the song from their Holiday playlist because some listeners complained that it was offensive to the #MeToo movement. In the days that followed, Canadian Broadcasters Bell, Rogers, CBC and Corus announced they too would be removing the song from their holiday playlists. This has been discussed at great length among our little group here at 91.9 The Bend and it was decided to let you..our valued listeners decide the fate of the song. We put it out there on our website as a poll and also opened it up on Facebook for comments and the overwhelming response is “PLAY IT”. Was I suprised…not really! For those who do find the song and it’s lyrics offensive, you are to be commended for bringing the issue to the forefront and people will be reminded of womans issues everytime they hear the song. It’s a classic holiday song, it won and Academy Award, it has been recorded by everyone from Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton, husband and wife Garth Brooks & Trisha Yeardwood to Michael Buble and Miss Piggy! And there have even been a few parody versions, like the one Jimmy Fallon did with Cecily Strong on SNL…hilarious. If we continue down the “offensive holiday song” list…..what will we have left ” The Christmas Song”….nope…sorry, someone is allergic to nuts..so we can’t have Chestnuts roasting…..
Maybe the Costanza family was on to something…. Happy Festivus!
