A championship win for the Moncton Magic is going to mean great things for the local basketball community, that according to a huge fan of the sport.
Norval McConnell has played, coached and is a fan of the local NBLC team.
He expects this big win will mean more youth signing up to play the sport, “Anytime you have something that is successful, positive and engaging for people, when they go and they see it, if they have the same opportunity to participate and play that game, you see an increase in enrollment. The Magic, especially given the fact that they have done a really great job of working with the minor basketball groups around the communities, I think those kinds of things will do good things for the growth of the game in the area.”
McConnell says the number of spectators at Magic games grew to over 3500 by the end of the season at the Avenir Centre, which is a huge jump over what they used to see at the Moncton Coliseum.
“People got into it. There were new fans, people who you had never seen at a games before. What is always most important to me is, there was huge family support because it is big family entertainment,” McConnell says.
The Moncton Magic beat the St. John’s Edge in four games straight to win the National Basketball League of Canada championship.
