A new private school for French children with learning disabilities will welcome its first class in the fall.
The Institut Apprenti-sage was founded by Vanessa Mazerolle and her husband Kevin.
It will also be the first to offer a translated version of the Orton Gillingham method to teach students with dyslexia.
It’s the most popular method to teach dyslexic children how to read says Vanessa.
“It uses all the senses to make the children learn the sounds. So not only do they see every letter and sound individually, they use their other senses to learn,” she says.
According to the Canadian Dyslexia Association, about 23 percent of people living in Canada are affected by dyslexia.
Mazerolle says the multi-sensory method is the most effective way to teach dyslexic children to read.
She says they had been approached by a few parents about giving the course when they found out it was available in French.
Vanessa and her husband, Kevin then decided traveled to Montreal to take the course.
