One candidate campaigning in Greater Moncton is running for better animal rights.
Brad MacDonald is the Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe candidate for the Animal Protection Party of Canada.
“I personally align with the platform completely so I’m running as a genuine candidate and I think that shines through to the constituents that I’ve talked to,” he says.
MacDonald adopted a vegan lifestyle to reduce his risk of genetic heart disease.
The injustices associated with animal agriculture lead him to advocate for animal protection and environmental conservation.
He says the party stands for a number of social justice issues with a special focus towards better animal rights.
“We’re more focused on removing animals from the property section of the criminal code and giving them their own section under non-human persons which would give them the rights that they obviously deserve, they’re sentient beings. It would also give them a voice in parliament which I’ve said many times has been lacking,” says MacDonald.
MacDonald says animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change and chose to focus on the issue during his campaign.
“I think that the animal rights part of it encompasses all of the issues we face today because violence against one being is the same as violence against any bring,” he says.
You haven’t seen any posters around, that’s because he chose not to do so in an effort to reduce waste.
In addition to better animal rights, the Party advocates for a number of social justice issues, including the environment.
MacDonald also chose to run without a team but says the use of social media has allowed him to connect with a lot of voters.
