Students who will attend the new Maplehurst middle school in Moncton’s north end, are getting set transition into the new facility.
The new school, located on Maplehurst Drive, will open on January 9th.
Principal Elizabeth Nowlan says students will be off for Christmas break starting on the 18th as the move continues, “Teachers are moving in next Wednesday, so the 18th. I have been in the new school the last couple of weeks, helping to get things organized and set up. It is an amazing facility.”
The students have been attending class at Evergreen and Northrop Frye Schools while they were waiting for Maplehurst Middle to open, “We started off in August and when the students returned in September, we started off the year as a middle school. So we are a school within a school. So the students shouldn’t see a change in that way,” Nowlan says.
The majority of the school is ready to go, with a couple of exceptions, “The bleachers aren’t in the gym yet, but they will be. They had to finish the gym floor first, but they are doing that this week. The playground isn’t finished but we have a bit of a budget set aside, so we will finish that in the spring,” Nowlan says.
There will be 600 students in grades 6 though 8, when it first opens, along with 41 teachers, 11 educational assistants, 6 custodians, a Library employee and two Admin Assistants.
