Students who are graduating this year are currently sitting in limbo wondering whether or not they’ll be returning to class.
Schools were closed in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grade 12 student at Harrison Trimble High School Emma Hayes says there is a lot of uncertainty right now, “We are definitely keeping each other connected and providing encouragement. We are going to get through this, no matter what. We know our government is at work and doing their best.”
Hayes says many students are concerned they’ll be missing important classes they’ll need for university in the fall, “There’s definitely a lot of confusion as to what is going to happen. It’s a day by day kind of thing.”
The government is expected to re-evaluate school closures in the coming days, but Premier Blaine Higgs has said he expects it will be at least May before they reopen.
Hayes says there has been no official word on whether prom has been cancelled or postponed, “We are hoping it is postponed. But, if not, we will definitely plan something all together. It’ll give us a reason to get dressed up and celebrate.”
The teachers and staff at a number of schools have recently come together to create videos for their students, as a reminder that they are thinking of them.
Some of the Harrison Trimble High School graduating students came together and have come up with their own video, “We saw the teachers created a video and we decided to recreate it exactly. We have a grad group chat, and we assigned roles to certain people an then put it together. We just wanted to bring a smile to the teachers and staff. Served as a reminder that we are all in this together,” Hayes says.
This isn’t how students expected they would finish out their high school years.
Hayes says , “We joke about how we are going to end up in some modern history book. I am writing letters and journal entries to keep for this time that will allow me to look back on this time.”
