The province of Maine has its first ever recorded case of a fatal shark attack.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources said Tuesday that a 63 year old New York woman swimming near Bailey Island was attacked by a great white shark.
Bailey Island is about 43km away from Portland, Maine.
Julie Dimperio Holowach died Monday as a result of her injuries.
Officials are urging swimmers and boaters to use caution near Bailey Island, and to avoid swimming near schooling fish or seals.
The only other confirmed shark attack in Maine waters happened 10 years ago near Eastport, and was reported to be a porbeagle.
