The Riverview teen who inspired others around the world to be kind to each other, would have turned 21 years old today.
Her father embarked on a ride to keep her memory alive.
Darren Schofield completed his 21 kilometre a day cycle, for 21 days today, in honour of his daughter Rebecca Schofield.
She was the teen behind #BeccaToldMeTo.
Even with her passing two years ago, Darren says she is still inspiring others. The week he started his ride, someone was spotted offering help in a grocery store, “A man was paying for his groceries, and he said, I am paying for hers too. He said, Becca Told Me Too and he pointed to the sky. Everytime we hear one of these stories, it touches us deeply.”
Darren says the morning rides have been very peaceful, and reflective for him, “I’ve enjoyed it. The support, emotional and physical and financial through this whole thing has been overwhelming.”
As of Monday morning, he had raised over $2500 for the Rebecca Schofield fund.
Today, he did an extra 24 kilometres for his other daughter Gabrielle, because he so proud of the young woman she has become.
It was a bit of an impromptu ride, “It was off the couch and onto the bike. Maybe next year,we’ll start on her birthday and finish it on Becca Schofield Day. We have lots of time to think about it, and train for it.”
Darren joked when asked what Becca would have said if she were here today as he completed his ride, “I think she would be pretty proud, and she would have said, I should have trained longer before I got on the bike,” Darren said with a giggle. “I think she would be pretty happy that I committed to it and accomplished it.”
Darren says even though Becca is gone, the memories live on, “She is remembered every day.”
