For the first time in at least ten years, the wreath that hung at the Moncton Fire Department in December stayed green.
Division Chief for Fire prevention Charles Leblanc says this is a part of the Keep the Wreath green program, “Basically it is kind of a symbolic gesture that every time we have a residential fire, we replace a green bulb with a red bulb.”
Leblanc says it is difficult to pinpoint a reason, but he says with respect to COVID-19, “One of the factors could have been that a lot more people stayed home this year. In years prior, sometimes people have not been around. With COVID-19, people have been at home and have an opportunity to keep an eye on their property, and to anything that could potentially happen or go wrong.”
Temperatures have also been milder than usual, which means heating sources haven’t been used as much as in the past.
Leblanc says firefighters had other calls, including a shed fire, but no calls for house fires.
