Over a dozen RCMP Officers patrolled Main Street yesterday prepared to hand out fines to any participants of an anti-mask protest march in front of Moncton city hall.
“They made sure we knew we needed to wear masks. They also told us that we needed to stand six feet apart, we needed to social distance and if we were in groups of more than five we would be fined,” stated a protester who asked to remain anonymous.
Last week, Codiac Regional RCMP Superintendent Tom Critchlow told Moncton City Council, in the Red Phase of pandemic recovery, individuals could be ticketed for violating public health guidelines.
Similar marches have taken place almost every Sunday for the majority of COVID-19. Protesters will continue to coordinate these events, “We all knew we were taking a risk coming out today,” said one participant.
It’s unconfirmed how many fines were handed out.
