There are mixed feelings about the decision to cancel safe grad and prom this year at Anglophone East Schools, due to the pandemic.
Cheryl Rhindress has a daughter graduating from Riverview High School, “I fully understand where they are coming from and I support them in that decision. We are in a pandemic and we don’t know where things are going to be in June so they have to make the decision. It is better they make it now, so that we are prepared an not surprised come June.”
But despite her understanding, she is sad for this year’s graduating students as well, “Fortunately the grads last year up until March, they had breakfasts, Christmas formals, things like that, but this year they have had nothing.”
She adds the students have worked their way up and it is a special time for them, “It’s kind of heartbreaking because grade 12 is an important year for them, I understand that. She (daughter) would have liked to have participated in some of those things, so that’s heartbreaking for some of them, I’m sure. Some may not go onto anything after,.”
Rhindress has heard there will be a small grad ceremony for diplomas and awards, being hosted by RHS, similar to last year’s.
Parents are also hoping to organize a parade again this year, but there are no firm dates as of yet.
