An investigation continues into an incident that sent schools into lockdown, and left many residents on edge.
RCMP Officers responded at 8:30am on Thursday to reports of a vehicle struck by bullets near Millenium Boulevard and Killam Drive.
Police say it appeared the shots came from the woods in Centennial Park.
An Alert Ready message was sent out, as police searched a large area in and around the park.
RCMP remained in the park throughout the evening as they continued their search for evidence.
Patrol helicopters and search dogs searched the area throughout the day.
Residents in the area were asked to lock their doors, stay inside and away from windows.
An updated Alert Ready message was issued at 6:05 p.m.
RCMP says there were no reports of injuries.
Several schools were placed under Hold and Secure or Lockdown status, including Bernice MacNaughton High School, Harrison Trimble High School, Hillcrest, Bessborough, Birchmount, Beaverbrook, Queen Elizabeth Schools, Ste. Bernadette and Le Sommet.
Anglophone East School District Spokesperson Stephanie Patterson adds, “The school and the District were in communication with the RCMP and followed their direction. Student safety remains the priority.”
Colleges in the area including Oulton and NBCC were also placed under a Hold and Secure.
Horizon Health closed its COVID-19 Assessment Centre and blood collection clinic at the Moncton Coliseum due to the police operation.
“Police did not find any evidence that warranted keeping the area contained at this time. No arrests have been made. People can return to their regular activities,” says Corporal Hans Ouellette of the New Brunswick RCMP. “This is still very much an active investigation. If you have any information that could assist investigators, please contact police right away.”
The Codiac Regional RCMP is particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have video footage from the area of Millennium Boulevard and Killam Drive between 8 and 9 a.m. on May 13, 2021. Anyone who has video, or who has other information that could assist the investigation, is asked to call Codiac Regional RCMP at 506-857-2400.
