The pandemic isn’t stopping an annual Harrison Trimble High School tradition.
Created in 1981, the Trojan Trek has raised a over $283,000 for the neonatal unit at the Moncton Hospital.
It started 40 years ago, because one of the students at Harrison Trimble needed $50, 000 for a medical treatment.
Grade 12 student Jess McKillop says they are doing a much smaller march this year with only 50 students, whereas normally the whole student body goes. Most of the funds being raised online, “We can’t go door to door to fundraise, which is why there is a huge push this year. It is more difficult than every to raise the funds we need. The pandemic doesn’t stop babies from being born, so we still need to raise the money that they depend on us for.”
McKillop says the goal this year is $20, 000, “Last year, we raised an all time high of $35,000. There’s no pressure but a record amount, we want to push to do that again.”
The Trojan Trek is usually held at the beginning of the year, but McKillop says they pushed it to near the end of the year to gain some normalcy, “You become a part of something that is bigger than yourself and you get the feeling that you are making a difference in the lives of others. It’s all about kids helping kids.”
