More than 600 residents recently participated in a survey about active transportation in Moncton which includes walking, cycling, rolling (skateboard, scooter, rollerblade, roller skate, wheelchair) or mobility device.
The survey featured multiple choice questions and a comments section and was accessible through the “Let’s Chat Moncton” website.
Respondents mostly said they are not comfortable biking on roads with vehicle traffic in Moncton and prefer using the trails instead.
Many said they drive most of the year but a sizeable portion did say they cycle and walk in the warmer months.
When asked about the overall cycling experience in Moncton, most believe it’s fairly inconvenient or stressful.
As for the barriers to cycling in the city, many said vehicle traffic makes them nervous while weather and distances were also factors.
In the comments received, participants cited an inadequate transit system and it was suggested sidewalks be paved with asphalt instead of concrete to avoid grooves and uneven surfaces.
Many said it’s not safe to cycle in Moncton with someone called it a “driving city” and another urged city hall to “get off the bike kick”.
Someone said if you want people to walk, you must build more sidewalks while a pedestrian noted many sidewalks aren’t plowed in the winter.
Some also felt Dieppe and Riverview should have been included in the survey.
The next round of consultations will seek public input on proposed recommendations and improvements.
