There will be no Canada Day celebrations in Cap-Pele.
The Village has decided to cancel the events in light of the discovery of recent discovery of 215 children in unmarked graves at a former residential school in Kamloops.
A post on social media states that they know there are many reasons to celebrate Canada’s great successes, but they feel this year it is more important than ever to pause and reflect on darker times in the history of our country.
It adds that progress has been made over the years, but Indigenous peoples still face systemic injustices.
Cap-Pele is part of the traditional unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq Peoples.
