One of New Brunswick’s most high-profile murder cases marks a grim milestone on Wednesday.
Businessman Richard Oland was found dead in his uptown Saint John office on July 7, 2011.
Court later heard that Oland had 45 wounds to his hands, neck and head area.
Investigators ruled his death a homicide and arrested his son, Dennis, more than two years later.
Dennis was convicted of second-degree murder in 2015 but was acquitted upon appeal. He stood trial for a second time but a judge found him not guilty in 2019.
Justice Terrance Morrison said while he could not accept Dennis’ denial of guilt, he also was not satisfied that the Crown proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
After Crown prosecutors announced they would not appeal the judge’s verdict, the Saint John Police Force said the death of the multi-millionaire businessman.
Bruce Connell, who was interim police chief at the time, said investigators will still consider any other information or evidence which comes to their attention.
