Vandals caused over $30,000 in damage at the Shediac Centre for Speed.
General Manager Tim Wile says they struck three times in May and June, smashing pretty much everything, “All of the coolers, most of my equipment, some of our race equipment, backhoe, all of the glass was smashed out of it. They set off the fire extinguisher systems over the hood vent in the canteen. Just general mayhem, smashing the windows out of the canteen.”
Wile says they are a seasonal business, and things have been very tough with the pandemic, “The weather also hasn’t been great, so we’ve really only run one event this season. It makes it difficult.”
He says, “I can understand people breaking in and stealing things to take and sell because they need money for one reason or another. But when they just break in and smash everything, and don’t take anything of significant value, you wonder what the motivation is.”
He says they’re now working with the RCMP in an effort to try and identify who did this.
Wile says they managed to get photos from videos footage of the property.
“If you can private message us or call us, or contact the RCMP, we’d greatly appreciate it,” Wile says.
Despite all of the damage done, Wile says this isn’t going to break the family’s spirit and desire to run the Shediac Centre for Speed, “We’ve run the facility for the good of the community for 20 years now and we’re not stopping now. It is a sport we love and an activity we enjoy as a family. I don’t see that anyone is going to stop us from that.”
