A local basketball program for youth between 10 and 14 years old, is helping kids to learn more than just the skills of the game.
Coach of Moncton’s 506 Shamrocks Basketball Brock Gallant says their goal is to build strong, healthy young humans who can set goals and overcome adversity, “I work on a principle of controlled heartbreak. We try hard things, knowing that we can fail because I believe we have a good structure in place to have that cry together after a loss, and then dust ourselves off and focus on how do we get to that goal.”
Gallant and Coach Michael Riedel have always wanted to create memories using the sport of basketball.
“The Shamrocks program is about building basketball skills, but primarily, our goal is to build strong, healthy young humans. It’s very important for people of all athletic abilities and age levels to have the opportunity to work in a competitive environment with people who are going to support them through the ups and downs. It is affordable and it is a sneaker sport. I am very excited about the future of basketball in Greater Moncton,” Gallant says.
The 506 Shamrocks program plays out of TH Sports on Barker Street, which has six basketball nets in a gym and they are able to host games. There is also a viewing area for parents.
Gallant says they’re holding two weeks of summer camps, July 26th to 30, and again August 2 to 6th. On top of skills training, the participants will gain knowledge from a few valuable guest speakers, including Wes Maestro Williams and Alan Stein Jr.
“For the summer camps, I will be looking at two groups of twelve to fifteen. This is the first time for a 506 Shamrocks summer camp,” Gallant says.
His goal is to eventually expand, to expand to ages of 8 to 16.
