Curl Moncton was forced to look long and hard at its future, due to the pandemic.
President Sherril Minns says revenues reduced and they found themselves significantly in debt..
A request to the City for financial assistance was approved this week, in the form of a grant for $66,000 dollars, that will help keep the Club afloat.
Minns says some tough questions had to be asked, “Do we want a vibrant curling community in Moncton. I think that the vote by City Council to approve the grant for Curl Moncton is very indicative of how much the City supports curling in the community.”
Minns says when COVID-19 hit, they were forced to close in January, but there were still bills to pay, “The grants that we received from the city will enable us to pay our outstanding creditors, settle most of our debt, but at least get us through until we can reopen in the fall and basically open up full steam ahead.”
Just one city councillor, Daniel Bourgeois voted against the grant stating he felt it should be a loan instead.
When the club was expanding in 2017, the City of Moncton provided a financing package worth just over $1 million while the provincial and federal governments also made contributions.
