The former fire station on Assomption Blvd. is being transformed to aid the regions vulnerable population.
The City of Moncton announced the site will be used as an emergency warming centre starting today.
Plans to open a warming centre at a local shelter fell trough after the location could not “fulfill the mandate,” reads a statement from a city spokesperson.
In response, St-George’s Anglican Church temporarily opened a warming centre, which provided shelter to about 40 people every night.
Now, through a location provided by the city, and with operational costs covered by the Province of New Brunswick, the warming centre is back on the move.
“This is not a permanent solution for our community. We will collectively be seeking a sustainable way to offer a warm space for those in need in the future,” reads the statement.
Daily operations will be overseen by the YMCA ReConnect program, with help from the Greater Moncton Homelessness Steering Committee.
