For Cap-Pelé Mayor Serge Leger, the new recreation complex will serve as the cornerstone for the village.
About 50 km east of Moncton, the Village of Cap-Pelé is slated to break ground on the Intergenerational Complex in April.
In light of the major work needed for the over 50-year-old local arena, Leger says they decided to create a new centre to accompany the arena, rather than only undergo renovations.
“It ensured the people in Cap-Pelé, they don’t need to go out of town and they can stay here and raise their family,” said Leger, adding the complex will have activities for people of all ages.
With a $13.5 million price tag, the development required a trifecta of funding, which has proved to be a roadblock for many communities. However, Leger says the village was “due” for funding and applauded the work of provincial and federal elected officials in the region.

The federal government chipped in $5.4 million, the Government of New Brunswick contributed $4 million, and the village raised $4.1 million.
Local governance reform plans include the amalgamation of Cap-Pelé and Beaubassin-est, so the complex will provide services for more than one community.
“We had preliminary talks with them before [the amaglamation], and we came to an agreement that they will pay 500,000 on a ten-year period for the centre.”
