The City of Moncton will move forward with upgrades to its aging Operations Centre after approving a recommendation to commit about $16 million towards the facility rather than the estimated $35.9 million required to construct a new building.
Located on Worthington Avenue across from the Moncton Coliseum, the Operations Centre houses several city departments, a fleet of snow removal vehicles and other equipment.
Sherry Trenholm, Moncton’s director of facilities, told council Monday that most of the current facility was built in the 1990s and faces a number of deficiencies in addition to inconveniences for nearby residents.
Repairs to the Operations Centre mitigates concerns for neighbours, provides more space for staff, retrofits eligible facilities for future use and includes others changes. It’s believed the development will occur in four phases, with the final phase slated for 2025.
A report brought to council showed three separate development options had been considered, including the possibility of creating a new facility. However, based on research conducted on developments in other communities, that option proved to be the most expensive, coming in at close to $36 million.
