Why is spring snow called ‘poor man’s fertilizer?’ Is it just an old wive’s tale? An attempt to find something good about the snow that buries us all winter long?
Actually, snow contains the important nutrient nitrogen. And snow that falls later in the spring, after the ground has thawed, soaks slowly into the ground, rather than running off, so more of the nitrogen makes it into your gardens. Ta da! Poor man’s fertilizer.
