Moncton City Council has approved the rezoning of land at the busy intersection of Lewisville and Shediac Roads.
The move paves the way for developer Jim Toogood to build a 54-unit apartment building with access from Barnaby Street off Pleasant Street.
City planner Bill Budd told council a buffer is planned between the four-storey building and the adjacent residential properties.
“There will be a six metre wide landscape area between the fence and the parking area (of the apartment building) where you’re going to see a green kind of landscape with features such as trees and lawn.”
Budd told council he believed the building will be better suited for the property as opposed to the existing five homes on the site.
“The municipal plan talks about in certain older parts of the city we should be in-filling with higher density mixed-use buildings along transit corridors.”
In addition to five homes being demolished, their driveways will also be removed before construction begins.
A public hearing was held over the rezoning and several citizens objected citing concerns such as traffic congestion, parking, snow removal and drainage.
Council also gave approval to the stop-up and closure of Barnaby Street which will end at the building parking lot preventing it from being extended to Lewisville and Shediac Roads.
