The Magnetic Hill Zoo will soon be getting three red-necked wallabies from a zoo in Ontario.
Zoo director Jill Marvin told Moncton City Council this week that the joeys were born last year.
“The Peterborough Zoo actually put out a call on our accredited zoo facility if there was anybody interested in these animals. We then saw an opportunity to take care of them.”
The wallaby is a smaller member of the kangaroo family and is native to Australia and New Guinea.
“We don’t know the sex of the joeys. The joeys are still in the pouches with the mothers. They’re going to be kicked out pretty soon,” added Marvin.
City council has approved spending $341,708 on a new enclosure at the zoo for the wallabies.
The tender was awarded to Maritime Fence Limited.
