It may be almost summer but the City of Moncton is thinking about next winter.
Many residents were unhappy with snow removal operations last winter as the city battled back-to-back storms and above average snowfall.
A city report recommends spending an additional $500,000 on the snow removal budget.
Moncton General Manager of Operations Alexandre Binette told city council that 10 employees should be added over the winter.
“To convert 10 casuals from our parks department since these individuals are working in the summer only and make them permanent full-time employees. This would also greatly help our parks department because it’s becoming more challenging to be able to recruit and retain these casual positions.”
Some changes planned for next winter include hauling snow earlier and more often, spreading employees to off-shifts and contracting out to do sidewalks in some areas.
City Council unanimously decided to add the additional funding and next winter’s snow removal budget will be $6.5 million.
