A 38-year-old man faces nine charges after an incident on Argyle Street in Moncton which prompted a large police response.
Around 10 a.m. on Sunday, Codiac RCMP responded to a home for a 911 distress call where an individual was armed and barricaded.
A perimeter was set up and nearby residents were advised to shelter in place.
Specialized police services were brought in as a precaution, including the RCMP Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Police Dog Services and Explosives Disposal Unit.
Around 3 p.m., a man was arrested at the scene.
The police response was scaled back and residents were told to resume normal activities.
No one was hurt and police say the incident did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready message.
Matthew James Francis of Moncton appeared on Monday in Moncton Provincial Court via tele-remand and was charged with the following:
- Two counts of breach of probation
- Uttering threats
- Resisting arrest
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Uttering threats to damage property
- Uttering threats of death and bodily harm
- Harassment
- Intimidation of justice system participant
He remains in custody until his next court appearance.
At this time, Mounties do not believe this incident is connected with an incident that occurred on Argyle Street last Thursday.
“We know it can be distressing for residents to see a police response in their neighbourhood, especially two in such a short period of time,” says Staff Sergeant Dave MacDonnell of the Codiac Regional RCMP.
“Please know we are constantly assessing every incident to ensure we are responding appropriately and safely. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and understanding.”
